Edexcel was formed in 1996 by the merger of the Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC), the country’s leading provider of vocational qualifications, and the University of London Examinations & Assessment Council (ULEAC), one of the major exam boards for GCSEs and A levels.
The history of these separate bodies can be traced back to 1836 when a royal charter gave the University of London limited functions of conducting exams and conferring degrees. The University introduced school exams in 1905.
In 1974, the Business Education Council (BEC) was established. This had a remit to rationalise and improve the relevance of sub-degree vocational education in FE and HE colleges and in polytechnics. Within 18 months, BEC took over responsibility for ONCs, ONDs, HNCs, HNDs and other qualifications.
BEC merged with TEC in 1984 to form the Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC). This then merged with London Examinations in 1996 to form Edexcel.
The name ‘Edexcel’ whose name derives from ‘educational excellence’. The Edexcel Foundation, which ran the organisation, was a charity, managed by board of trustees.
Edexcel qualifications are recognised by UK Government National Qualifications Framework. For further details please visit www.qca.org.uk , www.ofqual.gov.uk

Assessment:
Each unit requires two pieces of assessed work:
•    an examination, which is internally marked and may be sampled by Edexcel: and
•    an assignment, which is internally marked by the College.
Both pieces of assessed work are marked out of 100 and both pieces of assessed work carry equal weighting. Students will be given a mark each time a piece of work is assessed. To pass the unit requires a pass mark of 40% or above in both pieces of assessed work.
For example, achieving a mark of 70% in one piece of work and 35% in the other will not qualify for a pass in the unit. When a student has passed both pieces of assessed work (i.e. examination and assignment), he or she will be issued with a final grade, which will be issued on the average of the two marks.
